Flash is the Devil

The main beef I have with Flash is that it’s overused, requires a proprietary plugin to even work, and is often slow and buggy. However, with that said, I must learn the technology whether I want to or not.

Today in class, as part of a quiz, we had to arrange the elements of the slot machine you see above (go ahead, click the lever!) out on the “stage” and code it so that it works. The intention was to code it so that when you click on the lever, the slots being to spin, and then when you click on any one of the three slots, they stop. If you win, lights flash and a message pops up.

I can’t say that I’m good at Flash, but I understand enough for the class. Anyway, I hope you like this pointless little slot machine game above.

Hey Jeremy. So I’ve been looking at full sail on and off for about a year now. I’ve always hated that in their curriculum they focus on flash for so long. I use to be really big into flash animation (6 years ago when I started). I now hate it, and don’t ever use it in my projects.

Well, what I came here to ask you was how are the classes, do you feel like you have gotten a better grasp on design? The other thing I’m worried about is, after you graduate will they help you out in finding a job with a firm as you go, or what? Thanks in advance. Have a good day. Maybe I’ll see you around.

Hey buddy. I hate Flash as well, and can NOT stand it. Full Sail still teaches Flash as a core concept, but I’ve begun to realize that it’s because teaching OOP with something like Java would be harder; ActionScript can be much more visual and that really helps understand the concepts of objects. The first flash class, Flash Fundamentals, was very hard for me. Granted, I had other things in my life (side work, mainly) which took away some of the time I probably should have dedicated to Flash. I passed that class, but I failed the next class (OOP). In fact, out of 7 people, only two passed. I don’t mind failing, because there is no penalty for academic failure; you can retake the class up to three times, I believe, without having to pay for it.

As far as graduating and finding a job, you’ll most likely not even ask Full Sail for help because by the end of your degree program, your portfolio should be attracting lots of people. However, I have only heard good things about Full Sail’s placement office. Have a good day too, and keep in touch! If you’re in the Orlando area, feel free to let me know. I know a lot of people from Full Sail and we go out to bowling, Universal Studios, etc.

Thanks for the reply man. I did flash on and off for about 2 years so I’m sure I’ll pass, but I won’t like it. I’m currently working on getting a full tour of the campus now to come check everything out.

I’ll keep in touch when I decide to come down and hopefully attend the school. Hope you don’t mind if I bowl a solid 300 ;) JK, that’d be bad ass though. Thanks again.
